Indians
are proud of Indian traditions. We are the pioneers in Ayurveda
System of Treatment. China has their own system of medicine.
German have at their hand homoeopathy as their system of
medicine. Modern medicine is of European parentage. For
ages, Ayurveda has truly been remained as India's own system
of medicine. Our ancient sages had put their heart immensely
into this discipline. But Govt of India has not accepted
Ayurveda as our system of Medicine. A declaration of Ayurveda
to be our national system of treatment is long awaited.

| The
traditional systems of medicine are great relevance
to the health of the people. It is calculated that
80 percent of the world population are still relying
on traditional system.
Kerala is the first state in the country, which separates
the traditional ayurveda into three, viz. Indian systems
of Medicine, Homoeopathy and Ayurveda Medical Education.
The Department of Indian Systems of medicine in Kerala
undertakes medical aid mainly in Ayurveda systems
to the people through the network of Ayurveda Hospitals,
and Dispensaries. In-patients and out-patients are
treated in the Hospitals and no in- patients are treated
in the Dispensaries. For the population of more than
3 crores the department has 727 Ayurveda Dispensaries
and 115 Ayurveda Hospitals all over the state. The
Department has District Ayurveda Hospitals and District
Medical officers in all the 14 Districts.
One Sidha Hospital at Vallakkadavu in Thiruvananthapuram
District, Seven Sidha Dispensaries and two units attached
to the Ayurveda Hospitals are also functioning in
the state. Due to the dearth of qualified hands in
sidha Medicine, initial steps are being taken to start
a sidha college in the state. Dr. P.K. Mohanlal, former
Director of Ayurveda Medical Education was appointed
as a special officer for this purpose and he has submitted
a report to Government.
One unani Dispensary is also functioning under this
Department at mogral in Kasargod District.
In another scheme, for the continuance of the hereditary
system we are providing Grant - in - aid to 97 (Ninety
seven) private hereditary Ayurvedic physicians. |
